Gout-Friendly Eating: Nutrition Guidelines and Diet Restrictions

Gout is a form of arthrites that can affect different parts of the body such as toes, small joints of the hands, wrists, ankles or knees. Symptoms often include acute pain, swelling, intense sensitivity and inflammation in the joints.

Gout Causes, Symptoms, Treatment - Are There Home Remedies For Gout ?

The exact cause is unknown, but a large amount of uric acid in the body is one of the reasons. Other possible causes are genetic, excessive alcohol consumption, lack of physical exercise, excessive protein intake and stress.
Gout is related to other types of health problems, such as hypertension, diabetes and kidney stones, so it is important to follow appropriate medical treatment. In addition, some easy-to-follow home treatments can promote healing and alleviate symptoms.

Cider vinegar:

Cidervinegar, which is used to treat headaches and stomach, also helps to

treat gout and arthritis. The acidity of cider vinegar helps relieve acute pain. You can also add honey to stimulate the body's anti-inflammatory response.

Mix a teaspoon of cider vinegar in a glass of water and drink two to three times a day. If you find this remedy useful, you can increase the dose of cider vinegar to a maximum of two tablespoons. Another option is to mix two tablespoons of cider vinegar with two tablespoons of honey. Take twice a day, once in the morning and once before going to bed.

Ginger root:

The anti-inflammatory properties found in ginger can be very helpful in relieving pain and inflammation. There are several ways to use the root of ginger in the treatment of gout. Mix equal amounts of fenugreek powder, turmeric powder and dried ginger root powder. Put a teaspoon of this mixture with hot water. Take it twice a day.
You can also add ginger root to the kitchen recipes, or eat a small piece after removing the bark. Another option is to make a ginger root paste with a little water and apply this paste over the affected area. Leave on for about half an hour. Do this once a day.

Baking soda:

An important factor contributing to gout is an increase in uric acid in the body. Bakingsoda can help reduce the amount of uric acid and relieve pain. Mix half a teaspoon of baking soda in a glass of water and drink it. Drink this solution four times a day, but no more than that.

Some people suffering from gout even reported that ¼ teaspoon of baking soda, 4 times a day, can relieve their gout attack. Make sure you have a drink just before going to bed. Why? Because the body is more acidic at night and this is the reason why many gout attacks occur between midnight and dawn. Continue for up to two weeks.

If you are over 60, do not take more than three times a day. Also, ignore this remedy if you suffer from hypertension. There are potential side effects such as increased blood pressure, nausea, loss of appetite, headache, vomiting, etc. Ask your doctor for advice before taking this remedy.

Caution: Baking soda has an abrasive effect and it is high in sodium. Be sure to reduce the intake of salt in other foods. A teaspoon of sodium bicarbonate contains about 1200mg of sodium and taking large amounts can have serious effects on your health because sodium is a corrosive that can cause burns to the mouth, esophagus and irritate your stomach . Also taking a high amount for a long time can cause alkalosis.

Lemon juice :

To relieve the pain of gout, it is essential to alkalize the body and neutralize excess uric acid in the blood. This can be done easily with fresh lemon juice and baking soda. Eat other fruits rich in vitamin C to strengthen the tissues of the body. Mix the juice of one lemon with half a teaspoon of baking soda. Let it stand for a few seconds, then mix it in a glass of water. Drink immediately. Another option is to put the juice of half a lemon in a glass of water and drink three times a day.

Cherries :

Cherries, can also be very useful in the treatment of gout due to their antioxidant properties. Cherries also contain anthocyanins, which can reduce inflammation as well as minimize flare-ups of gout. Eating 15 to 20 cherries a day is highly recommended. For best results, start your day with a few cherries. It is best to eat fresh cherries. Another option is to drink a glass of cherry juice enriched with a few chopped garlic cloves daily.

Epsom salt :

Epsom salt is another useful ingredient for the treatment of gout and other forms of arthritis. The large amount of magnesium present in Epsom salt also helps to improve your heart's condition and blood pressure. Soaking the affected body part in warm water mixed with Epsom salt relaxes sore muscles and relieves pain. For a bath, add two cups of Epsom salt to the hot water of the bath. Soak your body until the water starts to lose heat. To do this, once a week. If you have severe gout, you can try it two or three times a week.

Medicinal plants to treat gout :

Celery seeds for gout :

Celery seeds are rich in omega-6 fatty acids, diuretic oils (3-n-butyl phthalide which give celery its odor and taste) a very powerful diuretic that cleanses the system of excess liquid, Celery seeds stimulate the kidneys to eliminate uric acid and crystals that causes gout, as well as alkalizing blood. Celery seeds also help to lower inflammation and according to James Duke, Ph.D., a medical botanist and author of best-sellers "The Green Pharmacy" and "The Green Pharmacy - Herbal Handbook"; the celery seeds contain about twenty different anti-inflammatory agents!

In addition, according to Kerry Bone, one of the leading experts on herbal remedies said that celery seeds work wonderfully with her patients. But the truth is that he has not had many studies done to scientifically prove that celery seeds are an effective treatment against gout, with the exception of a study carried out in China on laboratory rats that has concluded that celery seeds decrease uric acid levels. (Published in 2008 - Food Science, Tong Guo Hui authors, Zhang Yi, Zhang Yao-nan, Li Hong, Liu Jie).

Nettle :

Nettle root reduces uric acid, it contains vitamin C which according to studies helps to reduce uric acid levels when used regularly. According to one study the decrease can reach 50%. Potassium is another beneficial element in the nettle.

Potassium supports uric acid and turns it into an easier form to eliminate, so you can take other foods rich in potassium such as bananas that can also help relieve gout. Nettle root is a diuretic and can help relieve symptoms by stimulating the kidneys to excrete excess acid. So you have to make sure to drink plenty of water, regardless of whether or not you are taking the nettle. Nettle is also a natural antihistamine. This is useful for gout as it helps to reduce the swelling. It is because of this that nettle has also been used to help treat open wounds.

Here are other diuretic plants :

Purple tope, fennel, oat straw, cleavers and goldenrod, diuretic plants help the kidneys eliminate excess uric acid as well as other toxins.
You can use diuretic plants in combination with anti-inflammatory plants.

Turmeric  :

Curcumin, the active ingredient in turmeric can relieve the pain and swelling caused by gout in the following way. It can inhibit the production of prostaglandin which causes pain. Curcumin has antioxidant properties that reduce the production of COX-2 - the inflammatory enzyme. Studies on laboratory mice have shown that curcumin is able to slow down the onset of rheumatoid arthritis. In another study, rheumatoid arthritis was induced in mice, giving them then curcumin. This treatment with curcumin has reduced the swelling and inflammation of the joints. Curcumin can also help the adrenal glands to produce higher levels of cortisone. This could relieve the inflammation and pain caused by gout. Try to get curcumin supplements combined with bromelain which could increase the anti-inflammatory effects and improve curcumin absorption levels.

Essential oils for gout :

1-In massage: 1 drop of essential oil of gaultheria lying down + 1 drop of juniper + 1 drop of rosemary with camphor + 1 drop of peppermint + 1 drop of helichrise + 5 drops of vegetable oil of St. John's wort.

Do not forget to check out the side effects of each plant you are using.

Your diet against gout :
You must consume large amounts of water, your body is composed of about two thirds of water. When you do not consume enough water, your body and kidneys will not function properly. Your kidneys are essential in treating arthritis. They help to eliminate excess uric acid. Another reason, for which it is necessary to drink a lot of water, it helps you to lose weight. People with gout tend to be overweight, water is the key to your diet. Drink at least 6-8 glasses a day and if you have an active attack try to drink 10 glasses a day. Avoid drinks that can dehydrate you. Drinking a soda a day doubles your chances of having a gout attack if you are prone to this disease.

Fruits and vegetables :
Fruits and vegetables are a source of vitamin C, potassium, fiber, anthocyanins, bromelain, quercetin and water. These principles not only can help reduce painful swelling and joint damage, but also help prevent or reduce the incidence and severity of gout.
Let's take a look at some of these properties.
Vitamin C

"Arthritis and Rheumatism" is a study on gout and vitamin C. This study found that when a person has vitamin C intake of 500 mg per day after a period of six weeks, acid levels uric mean drop of nearly fifty percent. It's just amazing! It's as good or better than prescription drugs to accomplish the same task.

Fibers :

Fibers are not able to eliminate this painful condition, but most people who suffer from gout tend to be overweight or even obese. For this reason, fiber is essential to help you lose weight.

Foods you should not eat in case of gout :

Meat, offal and seafood :

Eliminate seafood, offal and meat during a gout. These foods of animal origin are rich in purines, which are decomposed by the body into uric acid.

Alcohol :

Not only increases your uric acid level, but also makes it more difficult to eliminate, doctors generally recommend that you abstain from alcohol altogether.

Sweet drinks :

Avoid sugary drinks with high fructose content, such as sodas and fruit juices, sweeteners stimulate the body to produce uric acid. One study found that men who consumed a lot of fructose were more likely to develop gout; in 2010 this same research team said that drinking sweetened drinks with fructose every day increases the risk of gout in women.

Vegetables containing purines :

Asparagus, cauliflower, spinach and mushrooms have a higher purine content than other vegetables. But if you like these foods, there is no reason to avoid them altogether. Although several experts believe that the purines contained in the vegetables do not cause gout, so there are pros and cons, it's up to you to choose.

Other Tips :

- According to the professionals who are against purines of plant origin, it is necessary to limit the mushrooms, the spinach and the sorrel, as well as the pulses - to consume in small quantities.

- Avoid fatty foods, limit solanaceae (potatoes, peppers, eggplants and tomatoes), not to mention cheeses.

-Surveillance of metabolic disorders associated with obesity, diabetes, hyperlipidemia and hypercholesterolemia.

-Gout can be triggered by diuretic drugs, unbalanced diets and fast.

Cord Blood Banking Everything you need to know

'' These days, more new parents are considering cord blood and cord tissue banking because of all the great things that preserving their baby’s newborn stem cells has the potential to do.

Current applications for newborn stem cells include treatments for certain cancers and blood, metabolic and immune disorders. Additionally, newborn stem cell preservation has a great potential to benefit the newborn’s immediate family members with stem cell samples preserved in their most pristine state '' .

Cord Blood Banking Everything you need to know

What is cord blood ?

Cord blood, also called placental blood, is the blood that is present in the placenta and in the umbilical cord. It is interesting from a medical point of view because it contains hematopoietic stem cells, which produce throughout
our lives all the cells present in the blood :

red blood cells that transport oxygen .
white blood cells that fight infections.
the pads that stop the bleeding.

Donating cord blood means giving a patient the opportunity to make a new blood and in some cases to heal.

What diseases can be treated with cord blood ?

In general, stem cells present in cord blood are used to treat blood diseases that are mostly cancers, such as leukemias or lymphomas.
Stem cells in cord blood have the advantage of being naïve, that is, they potentially generate less immunological complications after transplant than in bone marrow transplantation. However, cord blood can not be indicated in all cases because it has other characteristics that are sometimes less favorable than the bone marrow.

Why do we need to have cord blood donated to public cord blood banks?

'' Cord blood donated to a public bank provides another source of hope for patients who have no matching donor in their own family, no unrelated donor in bone marrow donor registries that is a suitable match or no time to find a donor. As with bone marrow, cord blood stem cells may be capable of generating all the cellular elements in the blood and immune system '' .

Collecting cord blood - fast, simple and painless :

after birth, midwives can collect blood from the umbilical cord, also known as placental blood, provided the mother has given her consent and has been warned of the purpose of the collection. This cord blood is of major therapeutic interest it contains haematopoietic stem cells. The same as those present in the bone marrow and which give birth, throughout our life, to all the cells of the blood.
‘’ Once the collection is complete, they will seal the bag, attach the pre-printed label with your family’s information, and place it in the collection kit. A medical courier will pick up the kit from your hospital room and transport it to a storage facility or simply to  public cord blood banks , where lab specialists will process the cord blood in preparation for long-term storage ‘’ .  ( Source : Viacord

Placental blood transplantation is a therapeutic alternative to transplant with bone marrow donor. Like it, it helps treat blood diseases that are mostly cancers, such as leukemias or lymphomas, explains Dr. Evelyne Marry, director of the registry France Marrow Transplant at the Agency of Biomedicine. To treat patients, doctors can use placental blood, if the other options have been failures.
